Top Cancer Foods

By Alya Alyssa Kattan

There is lots of evidence proving that avoiding or limiting the consumption of certain foods could prevent or delay the onset of cancer.  The World Health Organization has reported that 70% of all cancers can be prevented with simple changes in diet and lifestyle.  Cancer-promoting foods are high in refined sugars, processed carbohydrates, preservatives and byproducts of deep-frying.

The Most Wanted Food Offenders/Criminals

French Fries

Fried foods increase one’s risk of developing cancer, especially when they contain hydrogenated oils, trans-fats, and a byproduct of the deep-frying process called acrylamide. Acrylamide is a well- known tumor causing agent having adverse effects not only on the brain, but on the reproductive system as well.  Potatoes produce acrylamide during the frying process this is why fried potato products such as french fries, tater tots, potato chips and hash browns are considered cancer-causing foods.

Doughnuts are the WORST offenders of the bunch; they contain hydrogenated oils, white flour, sugar, and acrylamides which makes them particularly risky to those who are trying to reduce their cancer risk.

Hot Dogs

Hot dogs are a high risk food for stomach cancer and other malignancies of the digestive system. Hot dogs and salted meats such as bacon or bologna are even more dangerous when sodium nitrate, a meat preservative, is added.  These meats should be eaten in moderation or avoided completely, especially those at risk for stomach cancer.  Also if you must have a hotdog, look for those without sodium nitrite listed among the ingredients.

Soft Drinks

These beverages are very high in refined sugar and study after study have shown that it can increase stomach, colon, and pancreatic cancer risk.  A recent study published in “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention” shows that those who consume 2 or more servings of soft drinks per week have an 87% higher chance of developing pancreatic cancer compared to those who do not consume any soft drinks.  While sugar does not turn healthy cells into cancer, it is the preferred food source for cancerous cells and helps to promote tumor growth during the tumor formation process.
