Hot Dogs = Cigarettes?

By Alya Alyssa Kattan

Can you believe that hot dogs are being compared to cigarettes?  Hot dog flavored cigarettes-TASTY!  All joking aside.  The cancer group project is demanding that hot dogs should carry a warning label that says hot dogs and other processed meats increases the risk of cancer-the same way cigarettes do about lung cancer.

Their reasoning for this is based on a study conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund showing that a daily 50-gram intake of any processed meats including hot dogs increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 21%.  This is due to unhealthy preservatives like sodium nitrate and nitrite.

Daily consumption can be bad for your health but who eats hot dogs every day?  Most nutritionists would agree that eating any food in moderation isn’t harmful.

What do you think of the picture on the billboard below?  Do you believe this act is justified?  Would warning labels deter you from buying something?
