The Perricone Prescription: 28 Days for Total Body and Face Rejuvenation!

By Alya Alyssa Kattan

Nicholas Perricone–sounds familiar? Maybe to some of you (I mentioned his name a few posts back), he’s the infamous skin doctor who has appeared on Oprah, Today Show, 20/20, been featured in many magazines, and his skin care products are highly praised by celebs like Eva Mendes, Uma Thurman, and Courtney Cox.  He has also written many books on weight loss and skin, most of which reached the best-sellers list.

So what’s all the fuss about?  Well there is a lot of controversy surrounding this dermatologist and today I will be reviewing one of his best sellers where he says bad food choices cause swelling and inflammation which are “directly responsible for wrinkles, acne, degenerative diseases, and accelerated aging.”

The Product

The Perricone Promise

The Claims

  • Reverse the aging process and look younger in as little as three days
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Improve your metabolism
  • Lift your mood
  • Repair the skin by improving the texture/clarity
  • Rejuvenate your immune system
  • Shed unwanted body fat and tone up
  • Decrease cancer risk
  •  Make your heart resistant to disease
  • Improve bone density

The Diet

Absolute No-Nos!:

  • Alcohol
  • Breads
  • Many fruits, like grapes, mangos, oranges, papaya, raisins, watermelon
  • Many vegetables, like carrots, corn, peas, potatoes, pumpkin
  • Duck
  • Beef
  • Fruit juice
  • Pasta and noodles
  • Pizza
  • Flour
  • Coffee
  • Breakfast cereals (except non-instant oatmeal)
  • Granola
  • Pickles
  • Rice
  • Soda (including diet soda)
  • Sugar
  • Hard cheese

The Allowed:

  • Wild Alaskan salmon
  • Other fish, like tuna, shellfish, halibut, and trout
  • Vegetables like leafy greens, bean sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes
  • Fruits-berries, cherries, apples, pears, and some melons
  • Avocados
  • Olives
  • Turkey
  • Eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Whole barley
  • Beans
  • Oatmeal
  • Nuts
  • Green tea
  • Spices-oregano, ginger, cayenne pepper, and basil
  • Spring water (8 to 10 glasses a day)

How to follow the program?

  1. Diet. Eat 5 times a day-3 meals and 2 snacks.  Eat lots of foods from the good for you list above especially fish and berries.  You must always eat protein before you eat any carbohydrates.
  2. Take Supplements. Perricone recommends taking more than 25 supplements a day at breakfast and lunch. He suggests using his own line of products.
  3. Use His Skin Care Line. He has a line of skin care products, including cleansers, toners, lotions, lip plumpers, and moisturizers.
  4. Exercise.  He advices at least 20-30 minutes of exercise a day.

My thoughts:

If something sounds too good to be true it probably is!  Dr. Perricone makes some very big promises such as knowing the secrets to never aging; he talks a big game but where is the proof?

  • Eating more cold-water fish, fruits, and vegetables
  • Eating more often
  • Exercising at least 20-30 minutes a day

  • Many of his claims are not supported by research.

For example, he says that a breakfast of orange juice, a bowl of cereal with skim milk and bananas, a low-fat bran muffin with margarine, and a cup of coffee has terrible results. It causes “a rapid acceleration of the aging process, increasing the risk of heart disease, every known form of cancer, memory loss, and mental deterioration.” This meal, he says, will leave you moody, “fat, wrinkled, and fatigued.” In addition, he claims that eating a Snickers candy bar would be preferable. It would at least be “less inflammatory.” I have never heard or read of such claims in any reputable health journal and these statements go against everything I have learned in my nutrition classes!

  • Also I do not like diets that are too restrictive, they are difficult to follow.
  • This program is costly.  He requires the purchase of supplements and his cosmeceuticals which can cost close to $600 for a few months supply.

If you have money to blow and decide to try this approach, consult your doctor first before taking the supplements because they can interact with any medicines you might be taking.  Also if you’re pregnant, use caution when consuming fish (tuna) because of the mercury.

Some of the advice he has given sound safe and general knowledge but as usual it’s just a marketing strategy by advertising and encouraging readers to take his supplement…we’re better off just listening to your advice alya …love ur blog …I think I’ll skip listening to Dr Nicholas. and stick around reading your blog instead…
