Late Night Snacking: Do’s & Don’ts!

You have been watching what you eat all day but while sitting in front of the TV you get the sudden urge to indulge in some late night snacking (those darn food commercials)! Oh NO!! There goes my diet! Before you throw in towel remember that eating at night doesn’t have to spell doom for your diet. How? By eating easily to digest foods and keeping portions small (about 200 calories or less) where you are eating just enough to alleviate your hunger.

Here are 4 of my favorite snacks that are ok to eat before bed time. Snack on the skinny do’s to satisfy your late night cravings without sabotaging your diet!

The Skinny Do’s:

1. Popcorn

It is very low in calories, fat, and a good source of fiber! 3 cups of plain, air-popped popcorn contains less than 100 calories and 1 gram of fat. It’s a great snack for late night cravings. Be sure to eat low fat or even better yet air popped popcorn.

2. Peanut Butter & Apple Sandwich

Take a sliced apple and spread 1 TBSP of low-fat & sugar peanut butter. This combo can’t be beat! It contains fiber and vitamins; is delicious and a trick many celebs use to fight the bulge and combat their sweet cravings; boosts energy and metabolism from all that protein. Eating this snack before bedtime will allow you to wake up not feeling hungry therefore allowing you to get that morning workout in.

3. Greek Yogurt Parfait

Greek yogurt is super high in protein and low in carbohydrates! It is high in fat, so opt for a low fat or fat-free Greek Yogurt to avoid the extra fat! In a bowl, add 1/2 cup of yogurt and some mixed berries, and top off with a sprinkle of flax seeds or walnuts for added Omega-3. Added bonuses of eating this delicious snack are gorgeous hair (Omega-3) and younger looking skin (antioxidants)! Adjust portions to your taste buds but remember not to exceed 200 calories!

4. Rice Cake & Turkey Slices

1 rice cake topped with 1 tomato slice and 1 slice turkey breast. This contains only 60 calories and turkey contains tryptophan, which will help you drift into la la land (dreamland) even quicker.

The Fatty Don’ts:

Avoid anything that is fried, fattening, spicy, or sugary/high carb. Remember to pay attention to your portions and that the most important thing about eating is what you eat, not what time you eat.
